Kilsyth Community Council wants Main Street changes

Members of the town’s Community Council are hoping to gather public opinion about making the Main Street a “shared space” for pedestrians and vehicles in an attempt to arrest the steep decline in footfall to shops.

Community Council chairman, Scott Johnson said: “Last meeting we took a vote to reallocate a traffic order with a view to some kind of managed re-introduction of vehicle access without disrupting the front streetscape or increasing capital expenditure. We came up with a streetscape which lends itself to a shared space.

“It would allow the pedestrians the convenience of access, or for deliveries in the morning, and people to access the shops. People do their weekly shopping at Tesco or Asda but its people buying bits and bobs in the specialist and convenience stores that we have and that do well.”

Angela Russell, Town Centre Co-ordinator for Town Centre Activities, said: “Keila [Singh, Community Council Secretary] is helping me out by handing out questionnaires which we hope will deliver information back. It links between the local authority, the community and the retailers. The more I can get in, the more I can get people’s thoughts.”
