Kilsyth looks forward to its big Civic Week

Civic Week will kick-off in style on Saturday with the traditional opening parade through the town, followed by a packed week of exciting activities.

The programme will be on sale in the coming days and you will find many old favourites such as the Talent Show, football and the quiz, along with a few new surprises this year.

On Saturday, June 18, a car boot sale will take place from 10am to 1pm on the ground across from the Post Office.

On the same day, two new competitions will be held, including a football tournament for adults. For further details contact Gordon on 01236 825278 or e-mail [email protected].

A cultural day will also be held on Saturday, June 18, at the Bandstand in Burngreen where a Chinese Dragon and other great attractions will be present.

As part of the day there will also be the opportunity to reflect on our own culture and a Scottish Poetry Competition, where young people can recite poems they have learned at school, will take place in Burngreen Hall from 12pm to 1.30pm.

Anyone hoping to take part can either turn up on the day or fill out a form available from all of the local schools. Otherwise, arrangements can be made for forms to be delivered by contacting Jean on 01236 822960 or e-mailing [email protected].

The winners will be invited to recite their poems on the Bandstand that afternoon so bring along your folding chair and enjoy the entertainment.

Programme of events, June 11 to 19:

Saturday, June 11: Opening Parade, assemblage at Kilsyth Academy at 12.30pm, start at 1pm. At Burngreen, presentation by Chamberlain, crowing of Queen Laura-Ann, presentation of prizes, entertainment, side shows and stalls.

Sunday, June 12: Under 12s football, St Patrick’s Sportsfield at 2pm.

Monday, June 13: Junior Badminton Competition, Garrell Vale CE Centre at 6.30pm. Talent Show, Kilsyth Academy at 7pm, admission £1. Entry from Corrie Road. Croy Band Concert, Burngreen at 7.30pm. If weather is poor, Kilsyth Community Church will host.

Tuesday, June 14: Talent Show final, Kilsyth Academy at 7pm. Tickets on sale in advance - adults £2, children £1.

Wednesday, June 15: Presentation of prizes for Poetry and Art, Burngreen Hall at 5pm. Sponsored by Scotia Books. Open to all children of school age. Children’s Trivia Quiz, St Patrick’s Primary at 7.30pm. Open to teams of four, ages 12 and under. Teams can just turn up on the night to take part.
