The grant could be either £8,000, £10,000 or £12,000 depending on a public voting system which is taking place now in Tesco stores.

Voting began on February 27, and will run until March 6, and the Kirkfieldbank Park Campaign is up against two other projects in the area (one of them Law Primary’s outdoor plans, as reported last week).

In Tesco shoppers will be given tokens which they can use to vote for their favourite project and the number of votes will decide the placings.

The money being allocated to the local good causes comes out of the 5p charge being made now for poly bags supplied by supermarkets and shops

Plans for the new park include a new playpark, an outdoor gym, improved perimeter walkway, a sensory garden, a picnic area and a wildflower meadow, a space that the whole community can use and enjoy.

Julia Marrs of the Kirkfieldbank Community Group said: “If the Park Campaign is able to access the £12,000 of this grant, it will make a huge difference to Kirkfieldbank and surrounding area.

“We are time-limited to fundraise and seek match funding, with a view to an October start on the park.

“We are working hard to raise as much money as possible but this would give the project a huge boost towards the £210,000 needed for the park”.

Kirkfieldbank’s old playpark was demolished several years ago to make way for the new Primary School in the village, and although money has been made available from South Lanarkshire Council, the total runs far short of what is needed.

Last year a community group of local parents was set up to raise funds for the new park and they – with enthusiastic support of local schoolchildren – have been holding events including a Christmas Fair, and quiz nights to raise funds.

Tesco is supporting the project, and a bag packing session in Lanark last months raised over £700.
