Kirkintilloch car park dispute continues to test motorists’ patience

Last week’s Herald reported how tempers had flared at the Saramago Street car park – between Kirkintilloch Miners’ Welfare Club and Kirkintilloch Health and Care Centre – after a badly-parked car had blocked entry.

Hours after the Herald was published a car was abandoned on the social club’s clearly-marked loading area – blocking access for the mobile blood donation bus.

And one reader reported: “When attending a clinic this week there were no spaces for staff or patients and I was amazed to find a BMW being washed by a mobile car valeting service using two of the limited number of spaces.

“The staff seem to have forgotten that the centre exists to help patients, not to provide convenient parking places for staff.”

Miners club secretary Florence Cairney said: “There are times we cannot access our back fire doors as they are blocked, as is the delivery entrance.

“We have to practically have a sit-in to allow access for the Blood Bank.

“It is a very important service, but the barriers we put out are continually moved by rude drivers. The verbal abuse we receive at times is a disgrace.”

Council chiefs say staff at the health centre have been told to park at the nearby leisure centre to ease congestion, but residents say there is little evidence of the plea being heeded.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie has now pledged to find a solution for the problem.
