SOCIAL club organisers fear a serious injury is inevitable if action isn’t taken to ease the pressure on a jam-packed car park.

Tempers flared at the Saramago Street car park, between Kirkintilloch Miners’ Welfare Club and Kirkintilloch Health and Care Centre, last Friday morning after a badly-parked car caused gridlock.

Miners’ Club secretary Florence Cairney said: “There was utter chaos because this man, who was using the health centre, blocked traffic and forced people to reverse back onto the main road.

“We had numerous elderly and disabled people trying to get to the club for their Warm Welcome club and they couldn’t even be dropped off at the door.

“I was amazed that nobody was injured and when the man came back to the car he started screaming abuse at me.”

She added: “It can’t go on like this. I want the council to deliver on the promises they’ve made to me in the past and sort this out.

“I don’t know what the answer is, but they could start by getting the health centre staff to park up at the leisure centre.”

Thomas Glen, the council’s head of development and enterprise, said: “Health centre staff are asked to park at the nearby Leisure Centre when their section of the car park is full, leaving other spaces free for customers.

“In addition to this, the council has had meetings with the factors to try to find further solutions.

“Everyone using the car park is expected to park considerately, but we cannot control driver behaviour.

“The council’s plans for decriminalised parking enforcement will target roads in towns and villages where people park illegally.”
