Kirkintilloch pupils mark Holocaust Memorial Day with tributes to victims

A POIGNANT series of events were held last week to remember the victims of genocide throughout history.

In East Dunbartonshire Holocaust Memorial Day was commemorated with a ‘Building Bridges in Communities’ event at Kirkintilloch High School last Thursday.

Invited guests, councillors and the school community came together for the day of remembrance and contemplation.

Those who attended were very moved by performances by the choir, soloist Jonathan Taylor and two short plays.

Former pupil Daniel Hughes also showed a short film he had directed, while sixth year pupils Chloe Murray and Emma Wheelhouse, spoke about visiting Auschwitz.

Callum Henderson from the charitable organisation Comfort Rwanda also spoke at the event and talked about the terrible injustice still suffered in some parts of the world today.

Head teacher Eddie Muir said: “Not only was this event about remembering the Holocaust it was also about other acts of genocide like those in recent years.

“Callum Henderson gave a harrowing insight into the Rwanda genocide in 1994 and the difficulties still faced by some of the survivors. There is a great deal of work being carried out to help support and heal those still suffering.

“It is important that our young people know about these terrible atrocities and I am sure that once again this event will encourage them to embrace global citizenship, respect others and combat injustice in their daily lives.”

Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “This is the fifth year the school has hosted the Holocaust Memorial Event and the challenge every year is to communicate the message of the holocaust in a fresh and innovative way.

“Once again, the staff and pupils delivered a thought provoking and varied programme using art, music and drama, ensuring that future generations do not forget these important lessons from our past.”
