Kirkton Service users show them how it’s done

The Kirkton Service in East Renfrewshire is encouraging older people in East Ren to get fit — without leaving their armchairs.

The service is running a weekly chair-based exercise programme, proving that you can aim to get fitter no matter how mobile you
are.

The gentle exercise is specially designed for older people to increase muscle strength and improve mobility in joints as well as co-ordination and balance.

Barrhead man Jim Boulton (75) has been attending. He said: “The exercises help my balance and help me to go up and down stairs, and put my shoes and socks on and get dressed.

“My doctor has noticed a difference in me since I’ve been coming to the classes and has said he doesn’t need to see me for another six months.”

Anyone interested in joining the chair exercise class, or finding out more about day opportunities for older people, can call 800 7070 or email [email protected].

Knitters are also in demand at Kirkton as the Stitch in Time project is on the lookout for volunteers to teach youngsters.

Sessions take place on Wednesday afternoons at Carlibar Primary, following on from a successful series of events of last year which saw P6 pupils working with a group of older ladies to create a blanket and knit a teddy bear.

An East Renfrewshire Council spokeswoman said: “Along with being a therapeutic activity, a Stitch in Time values the skills of older people and enables youngsters to see the merits of their own work.”

Anyone intereste and teaching youngsters a thing or two is asked to call 800 7070.
