The BBC Newsnight presenter paid a visit to the 18th century structure last week and was a guest at a lunch aimed at raising awareness of the High Mill campaign in Prego in Clyde Street.

Kirsty, whose family hail from the town, said: “I was keen to endorse the campaign as the High Mill is an important part of Carluke’s history.

“I would be absolutely delighted if the plans came to fruition; it would be a real focal point for the town.”

Kirsty was joined at the High Mill by one of the campaign’s patrons, Sir Angus Grossart, who grew up in Carluke.

The merchant banker has had a number of high profile roles down the years including vice-chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland and chairman of the Board of Trustees at the National Galleries of Scotland.

However, seeing the High Mill finally realised would be a lifetime highlight achievement for Sir Angus.

He said: “The High Mill has a unique selling point and thanks to the dynamic involvement of local people could be something very inspiring for future generations.

“Completing the High Mill would be a huge boost of confidence for the town and everyone in it.

“This is a real opportunity for the people of Carluke to come together and that’s why I am backing this project.”

This influencial backing could not have come at a better time for members of the High Mill Steering Group, part of Carluke Development Trust.

The finishing touches are currently being prepared for a grant application to the Big Lottery Community Asset Fund.

The campaign received a further boost this week as the Scottish Government’s Land Reform Minister Aileen McLeod visited the site along with members of the development trust.
