Labour triumph in council by-election

Labour’s Gemma Welsh has been elected as the new councillor for Campsie and Kirkintilloch North.

Votes were counted, on a Single Transferable Vote basis, at Tom Johnston House today (Friday).

Gemma Welsh (21) pulled in 1,146 votes at stage five, followed by the SNP’s Billy Hutchison, who received 1,044 votes.

A total of 2,795 voters went to the polls - a turnout of just over 30 per cent.

The votes at the first preference stage were: Scottish Labour (851), Sottish National Party (743), Scottish Liberal Democrats (693), Independent (274), Scottish Conservative and Unionist (141) and Scottish Green Party (65)

The by-election follows the sad death of Councillor Charles Kennedy on July 13.
