Lamington tree killed by vandals

THERE is a highly unusual whodunnit unfolding near a Clydesdale hamlet with the victim being...a tree.

The owners of the chestnut on the approach to Lamington Mains Farm, Sandy and Sheena Edgar, are mystified and angry about what appears to be a deliberate effort to kill off the local landmark.

It has graced the village landscape for an estimated 100 years.

Sheena told the Gazette: "Several holes have been drilled deep into the tree and something — we think probably diesel fuel oil from the smell of it — poured in.

"It is very obviously a deliberate attempt to kill the tree off.

"It breaks mine and Sandy's heart every time we pass it because we know that it is dying, slowly but surely."

Anyone who saw any suspicious activity at the tree should contact Biggar Police on 01899 220100.
