Lanark Airshow centenary fly past

FOR the first time in decades, the air above Lanark Racecourse was filled with the buzz of multiple aero engines.

Pilots came together last Saturday to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Burgh's biggest single public event.

The Centenary Squadron circled the course to the delight of spectators and the impromptu tribute even included helicopters, led by record-breaking pilot and Lanark businessman Charles McCann.

Arguably, the most appropriate aeroplane taking part was a replica of a World War One British SE5a fighter, flying in combat barely seven years after the Lanark Show.

The centenary of the 1910 Lanark Air Show — Scotland's first aviation display and only the third ever held in the UK — is being marked in several different ways; there was a celebratory dinner on Friday night and a memorial statue will be unveiled in October.
