Lanark and Hamilton East election results

VOTERS in Lanark and Hamilton East have had their say at the ballot box...and Labour MP Jim Hood was once again victorious.

LABOUR MP Jim Hood stormed to victory in Lanark and Hamilton East, winning 23,258 votes - an increased majority of 13,478 from second-placed SNP candidate Clare Adamson.

Jim, who was first elected as an MP in 1987, successfully defended the seat he won in 2005, when his majority was 11,947.

He said: "I thank my constituents for re-electing me. I want to pay particular thanks to my election agent Jackie Burns, whose organisation and ability to gel things together is nothing but par excellence. And I also thank Jackie's wife Susan."

Runner-up Clare, increased the SNP vote to 9780 from the 7746 achieved by third placed John Wilson in 2005.

She said: "The SNP was marginalised because of the shameful way it was not included in the televised debates but we have increased our share of the vote and moved into second."

In third place was Conservative candidate Colin McGavigan (6981 votes), ahead of Liberal Democrat Douglas Herbison (5249), Independent Duncan McFarlane (670) and UK Independence Party candidate Rob Sale (616).

There was a 62.37 per cent turnout by Lanark and Hamilton East voters, with 46,635 votes cast out of the 74,773 total electorate.
