Lanark Grammar pupil dies after bus crash near Wiston

SEVENTEEN-year-old Lanark Grammar pupil Natasha Jade Paton, from Cleghorn, died following a coach crash on the A73 near Wiston, around 5.50am today (Wednesday).

Police and emergency services attended following the crash, in which the coach appears to have lost control then struck a bridge parapet and left the road, before landing on its side in a river.

The coach was carrying 39 pupils from Lanark Grammar School, and six adults, including the driver. They were on their way to Alton Towers.

Superintendent Iain Murray, Head of the Road Policing Department said: "Tragically one girl has died as a result of the crash. Two people were air-lifted to Glasgow's Southern General Hospital and several others have been taken to local hospitals to be treated for their injuries.

"Our hearts go out to the people involved and their families at this sad time."

"I would like to thank the motorists who stopped at the scene at the time of the crash this morning and provided assistance to those involved, and also to the local community who have been assisting this morning."

First Minister Alex Salmond expressed his condolences on behalf of the Scottish Government following the fatal crash.

The First Minister said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this terrible incident, including all the staff and students of Lanark Grammar School.

"My heart goes out in particular to the relatives and friends of the girl who so tragically lost her life and those who have suffered injury.

"On behalf of the Scottish Government, I pay tribute to the emergency service staff who work so hard on our behalf in often extremely adverse conditions, and do everything they can to preserve life, and the motorists and volunteers from the local community who did all they could to help.

"The priority is clearly dealing with the immediate situation, while whatever inquiries may be necessary will of course take place."

Education Secretary Michael Russell has been in contact with the Director of Education at South Lanarkshire Council following the crash.

Mr Russell said: "My sympathy and thoughts are with all the pupils and staff at Lanark Grammar School, particularly those involved in the incident itself and their family and friends.

"This must be a deeply distressing time for all of those involved. I have spoken with the Director of Education this morning and we will continue to remain in contact and stand ready to offer any help we can."

A spokesperson for NHS Lanarkshire advised that as at 12.15pm on March 31, 44 passengers involved in the bus accident had presented to hospital.

Sixteen patients were taken to Hairmyres. Five patients remain in hospital and are in a stable condition.

Fourteen patients were taken to Wishaw General. Three patients remain in hospital and are in a stable condition.

Twelve patients were taken to Monklands Hospital. The nine patients are still at Monklands Hospital and are in a stable condition.

Two patients were taken to the Southern General Hospital and both are in a stable condition.
