Lanark group to launch ‘green’ dog walking scheme

A GROUP of Lanark dog-walkers are going green to tackle the issue of fouling.

Smyllum Tenants and Residents Association (STAR) are working with South Lanarkshire Council to launch a campaign to encourage local residents to look after their area – and are hoping that the message will spread to other parts of Clydesdale.

A survey in the Smyllum area reaffirmed that dog fouling was a problem that concerned a large number of people.

Now the ‘Green Dog Walkers Scheme’ is being launched as a community-led initiative to attempt to encourage good behaviour in a friendly way.

Volunteers wear a ‘Green Dog Walkers’ armband or their dogs wear the ‘Green Dog Walkers’ collar to signify that they have “taken the pledge” to clean up after their dog.

They will carry extra dog-waste bags and will be happy to give a bag to those without one. And they will act as a friendly reminder to other dog walkers to clean up after their dogs.

Anyone who wants to become a ‘Green Dog Walker’ or who would like more information, especially those from other parts of Clydesdale, can come along to the launch on Thursday, September 11, at 3pm in Smyllum Resource Centre.
