Lanark parents furious

SAFETY fears voiced in the Gazette four months ago over the transport arrangements for Lanark Primary pupils being decanted to Carluke have been proven justified – after a child was injured leaving a school bus.

Mercifully, the five-year- old – who has not been named – suffered only minor injuries during the incident on Braedale Road on Wednesday afternoon.

However, the accident has led angry parents to state that it wouldn’t have happened at all if their warnings during the summer had been heeded.

They are now clamouring for South Lanarkshire Council to change its mind over its controversial choice of pick-up and drop-off points for the children on busy and narrow public roads.

Ironically, one of the mums who made their fears known to the council back in June was a horrified eyewitness to last week’s accident.

Waiting in Braedale Road to pick up her two children from the mini-bus arriving from the Carluke decant school, Mrs Sheila Fleming and other parents watched aghast and helpless as an accident she and others had predicted became a reality before their eyes.

The council has countered by saying that no safer pick-up points could be found and that they and the police would closely monitor the situation in future.
