And the minister, the Rev. Bryan Kerr, stresses that the church is hosting a “respectful dialogue”.

“The idea is that we listen to each other in the community rather than the usual cheering, booing and grandstanding,” he said. “We will take time to listen to our friends in the community and learn from them.”

The main debate is at St George’s Tron in Glasgow, where Finance Secretary John Swinney MSP and the Advocate General for Scotland, Rt Hon Lord Wallace of Tankerness QC, will participate in a dialogue – between 7pm and 8.30pm. That is chaired by the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland Rt Rev John Chalmers.

Greyfriars Church, along with nine other churches across the country, will link up with the Glasgow debate by using its content to stimulate their own discussions.

It is anticipated more than a thousand people will be able to participate in the evening nationwide, as well as the wider online audience.

All interested are welcome at Greyfriars tonight at 7pm.
