Lanark swimathon moved due to pool fault

DOZENS of swimmers – old and young, experienced and not-so-experienced – have signed up for the charity Swimathon for Sports Relief at Lanark pool this weekend.

But, as the Gazette went to press on Tuesday, South Lanarkshire Council was desperately sorting out other venues for the swimmers.

Lanark Pool was shut, due to a fault discovered in its high-tech floating floor, which allows changes in the water depth.

And Swimathon would not allow the event to be run at a different date.

Gerry Campbell, general manager of South Lanarkshire Leisure & Culture said: “Lanark Pool has been closed until further notice due to emergency works required on the floating floor.”

And a spokeswoman for the council was later able to tell the Gazette: “Swimathon have agreed that we are allowed to relocate our swimmers to other events.

The sessions available at other pools for Swimathon fundraisers this weekend are:

Friday, Larkhall 8pm; Saturday, Carluke 12:30pm; Saturday, Carluke 14:30pm; Saturday, Blantyre 1pm; Saturday, Eastfield (in Rutherglen) 3pm; Sunday, Eastfield 8am; and Sunday, Blantyre 1pm.
