Lanark Town Centre Study results

LANARK'S big wish list for the 21st century has been unveiled, revealing what action locals want taken to create a brighter future for the Royal Burgh.

The Lanark Town Centre Study is the product of over a year of work, commissioned by the newly formed Community Development Trust.

It will be used as a blueprint for the Trust's coming efforts to ensure the beleaguered High Street and surrounding area not only survive's but thrive's.

The study pinpoints five urgent areas for priority action. These are:

* More and better signposted car parking;

* A facelift for town centre buildings;

* Better publicity for businesses and services Lanark has to offer;

* Proper visitor and tourist routes and trails marked and signposted;

* Better communication between South Lanarkshire Council and the Lanark public.

Workshops consultants held to draw up the report also produced potential Glasgow's Miles Better-style slogans including Lanark the Brave, Lanark Alive, Phoenix Town and Back to the Future.

And bigger and better exploitation of the Wallace connections and closer tie-ins with New Lanark were deemed the best way ahead.
