Lanark train service changes are no laughing matter

A CLYDESDALE councillor claims he was simply laughed at when he objected to the controversial train timetable changes for Lanark and Carluke.

As reported in the Gazette, Scotrail has announced major changes in train services and times from December 14.

It will see all Lanark/Carluke services to Glasgow being diverted from the Low Level line to the surface line, so trains will no longer stop at Argyle Street or ANY station on from Central Station, such as the Exhibition Centre.

Scotrail claimed to the Gazette a fortnight ago that it had informed the council via the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) and liased directly with South Lanarkshire Council on the changes. It also claimed to have consulted passengers.

Subsequently, the council told the Gazette it had been informed by Scotrail of the changes but this had “not been a consultation”.

Now its claims of being presented with a fait accompli by Scotrail has been bolstered by the local councillor representing South Lanarkshire Council on the SPT, Clydesdale East’s Councillor Hamish Stewart.

He told the Gazette this week that he attended an SPT meeting with Scotrail in Glasgow on November 4 at which he and the representatives of other West of Scotland councils were simply told about the changes.
