Valerie (36), of Smyllum Road, will climb Arthur’s Seat as part of a charity Wheelchair Half Marathon, 15 years after a nightmare car crash which left her paralysed below the waist.

“It was a very traumatic and difficult experience for me,” Valerie said.

Just seven weeks into a dream job as a PE teacher in October 1998, Valerie’s life was transformed forever following an early morning motoring accident on a twisty stretch of road between Wiston and Abington.

Valerie lost control of her Renault Clio, which spun down an embankment, rolled over and hit a tree at the bottom.

“It is a blessing that I remember absolutely nothing about what happened,” Valerie said. “The accident was a quirk of fate, for which there is no real explanation.”
