Lanark’s William Smellie is remembered

DUE to its famous son William Smellie, the Royal Burgh of Lanark has had a long and mostly happy association with childbirth and all things maternal.

However, especially in bygone times, births were not always successful and a sad reminder of that is the special Garden of Remembrance to the stillborn from former William Smellie Maternity Hospital established many years ago at Lanark Cemetery.

Every year the sombre ceremony pictured here takes place, with a wreath-laying ceremony and words of remembrance said at the Garden.
