Lanarkshire joins rest of Scotland in wanting to remain part of EU

However, despite this being the same story all across Scotland the Leave campaign won by 52 per cent to 48 per cent.

North Lanarkshire voted 95,549 (62 per cent) to 59,400 (38 per cent) for Remain while in South Lanarkshire it was 102,568 (63 per cent) to 60,024 (37 per cent).

Although the total turnout was well down on the national average of 72 per cent as only 60.9 per cent in North and 65.3 per cent in South chose to vote.

In total Scotland voted 1,661,191 (62 per cent) to 1,018,322 (38 per cent) for Remain which has prompted First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to start investigating a second independence referendum.

Some local politicians Tweeted their reactions to the result.

Motherwell and Wishaw MP Marion Fellows: “Every single council in Scotland voted to remain in the EU, yet Scotland will be dragged out against her will and an even stronger Tory Government at Westminster will be forced upon us.

“It is now important for Scotland to consider all options to decide what path we will take.”

Airdrie and Shotts MP Neil Gray: “It was a decisive result for Remain in Scotland. There is now a clear divide in UK on how we view our place in the world, which is so, so sad.”

Uddingston and Bellshill MSP Richard Lyle: “UK pleaded for us to stay. Then they left us.”
