Lanimer 2014 booze ban “highly unlikely”

THE Gazette understands that it is highly unlikely that a public drinking ban will be imposed at the 2014 Lanimers in June.

It seems that moves, prompted by the police, to have the traditional one day exemption from the ban on drinking in public places removed will literally run out of time.

There have also been hints that the public consultation on the issue by South Lanarkshire Council showed that a significant proporton of the public wanted the special Lanimer Day exemption kept.

The people of Lanark - especially those in the licensed trade - have been avidly awaiting the result of the consultation, carried out through ‘Opinionmeters’ in various public places.

This exercise came under fire, with some claiming that the results would be too easy to distort through repeated voting by individuals with a vested interest; others felt it had not been publicised enough.

Whatever, Councillor Catherine McClymont told the town’s Community Council that, even if the result were for a ban, it was probably now too late to have the bylaws changed in time for Lanimer Day, June 12.
