It means that all the revellers from next year’s celebrations onwards will be made to suffer because of the actions of an irresponsible minority.

The police have now asked South Lanarkshire Council to consider removing the special exemption from public drinking bylaws enjoyed by Lanimer celebrants between the hours of 6am and 1am over the June day of celebrations.

The town’s police commander denies his force is acting in any way as killjoys and only “wish to provide a safe environment for families to enjoy their Lanimer Day”.

Chief Inspector David Walker went on: “We came forward with this request to the council following an upturn in the number of cases of drink-related violence at this year’s Lanimers.

“We are in no way trying to spoil people’s fun but public safety is our top priority.”
