Latest on post office at Croy

Croy Post Office’s designated counter will disappear in proposals identical to those earmarked for its counterpart in Balloch Eastfield.

Last month, we reported that there was uncertainty about the facility in the former mining village after it emerged that the shop that housed it was out for sale.

However, the Post Office has admitted that the counter will be swopped by a reduced service at the till point pending a consultation process.

A Post Office spokesman said: “If the change goes ahead the branch would be open for longer.

“Customers will still have most of the Post Office products and services they’re used to but some services will no longer be available at this branch,” she added.

It’s thought that the branch will close for three days in February when the counter is dismantled and users are now being asked to submit their views on the plans.

This isn’t good enough according to Gregg McClymont MP who last week slammed the identical proposal in Balloch.

He said: “I fear that the result of this process will be longer queues, fewer options and a diminished public service. His Labour colleague Mark Griffin MSP added: “It’s not modernisation. It is a cut to an important local service.”

Meanwhile MSP Jamie Hepburn said that he welcomed increased opening hours but still had reservations about the proposals.

The Scottish Nationalist said: “I am opposed to any withdrawal of services which people have come to rely on and I hope that these concerns will be taken on board.”
