Law playpark work to start

FEARS that the much-needed £76,000 facelift of Law Playpark could be scuppered by alleged council penny-pinching over £3000 are over.

Since a front page article appealing for donations to Law Community Trust appeared in the Gazette six weeks ago, cash has poured in and the Trust has reached its crucial 3000 target.

Payment of the four-figure sum to backers Virador by January 31 will release a 30,000 grant from the recycling company's community aid fund.

This will be added to 30,000 from South Lanarkshire Council's enterprise resources and an in-kind contribution of 16,268 from Community Resources.

Trust chairman Jim Wright, who hopes that the playpark will boast eight or nine pieces of new equipment, said: "We are absolutely thrilled to receive this money.

"The way the villagers have responded to the appeal has been terrific.

"I would hope that upgrade work at the playpark site will start in March and be completed in time for Easter."

The latest contribution to the playpark fund came courtesy of Law Masonic Lodge, whose members donated a 500 cheque, handed over to the Community Trust at the Tom Craig Centre.

This is in addition to 400 received by Law Community Trust from donors: 450 from Mother and Toddlers groups; 250 from a can collection at local shops and 200 from Law's SNP branch.

The rest of the money will come from existing Trust funds.
