Leadhills frozen out of water supply

Parts of Leadhills have been enduring a festive season without any water supply at all.

The second highest village in Scotland suffered lower temperatures than anywhere else, leading to underground pipes freezing.

For some the water supply cuts started as early as the first week in December and, as the Gazette went to press this week, there were still some properties awaiting reconnection.

Said one Leadhills resident: "The village is now full of Scottish Water men in yellow jackets, digging holes everywhere. Hopefully, things will be back to normal soon."

A Scottish Water spokesman said: "We have restored supplies to the affected properties in Leadhills after a prolonged loss of supply.

"We apologise for the length of time it took to restore all customers to supply. The remote location coupled with challenging conditions and stretched resources meant that our service did not meet its usual standards."
