Lesmahagow volunteers are real Diamonds

THE common perception of a 70-year-old man’s weekly routine might include lounging around the house watching television, doing crosswords, playing bowls, pottering around in the garden or maybe making a quick visit to the local garden centre.

But this image couldn’t be further from the lifestyle of remarkable Lesmahagow pensioner Tom Morris, who grafts hard doing voluntary work on seven days a week for a total of over 30 hours.

For the past three and a half years, Tom has helped his local WRVS by making home visits to vulnerable pensioners, or driving them to a hairdresser, shop or hospital up to 35 miles away.

And Tom is one of ten people chosen to meet Prince Charles and his wife Camilla at an event honouring their achievements at St James’s Palace next month.

Tom, and fellow local WRVS volunteer Myrtle Macdonald (70), who has done voluntary work for 40 years, have been named Diamond Champions by the WRVS for their service.
