Let there be light

DEFECTIVE lighting in two Abronhill streets has seen the area plunged into darkness for more than a week.

The News has learned that street lights in Birkenburn Road and Castburn Road in Whitelees have been out of operation since New Year’s Day – and that North Lanarkshire Council has failed to respond to calls from concerned locals.

We understand that the lack of lamplight would seem to have made the streets doubly hazardous as mounds of ice remain on pavements from the recent cold snap.

Disgruntled local Blanche Upton (73) said that she was involving the News as she felt complaints were falling on deaf ears.

‘The situation is absolutely ridiculous. The place is pitch black and it’s dangerous We have been calling the council’s call centre but they don’t seem to be very interested.

We did get told that somebody would be out to fix the light, but they haven’t appeared,” added Blanche.

A council spokesperson said: “We’ve been investigating this complaint every day since the festive holidays ended. As yet we haven’t found the problem, but we will continue to work on it until it is resolved.”
