Town centre plans

Sir, – From last week’s letter, it appears that Councillor O’Brien is exceedingly anxious to avoid answering questions. Why won’t he inform readers about the “joint venture project” he claims to have “spent some years” developing for the town centre “in conjunction with senior council officials” and “involving various organisations?” And just who is the mystery “main council official” who suddenly crashed the grand O’Brien project?

By his wall of silence Councillor O’Brien is strengthening the impression that his claims are, indeed, just make believe.

And just why has Councillor O’Brien, at his very first opportunity, resigned from four out of the five big committee places he was offered for the five years to 2017? After all, he is paid over £16,500 each year on top of his day job to serve as a councillor.

I also challenge activists in the local CICA organisation to clarify whether they support Councillor O’Brien’s resignations from 80 per cent of his offered big committee work. – Yours etc.,

Olympic legacy

Sir, – Now that the Olympics are over, it is time to consider their legacy for our capital city.

As a guest of the Olympic family, I was impressed by the speed and efficiency of the Olympic Route Network’s segregated lanes and would ask Boris Johnson to consider their retention for use by official vehicles and those who are willing to pay a premium.

Their aspirational affect on those in the slow lanes could well drive new generations to hard work and consequent economic success. – Yours etc.,

Army thanks

Sir, – I write to thank your newspaper for the support shown to The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards over recent years through your support of our Regimental Association.

We have been very grateful for the publicity we have received during Armed Forces Day parades and Remembrance Service Parades that you have covered in Glasgow.

We are particularly grateful to Neil McGrory for all he has done and continues to do on our behalf.
