Lights up at Rouken Glen as lighting fest returns

The arts festival — which sold out last year, as thousands flocked to see light installations across the park — is back for two long weekends (Thursday to Sunday) on February 6-9 and 13-16, to coincide with the half term school holidays.

The 2014 show is a historical affair — and local school children are in on the action too.

Inspired by Rouken Glen’s 19th century owner Walter Crum, schools across East Renfrewshire will put forward their most talented young designers for a competition with Crum’s textile company, Calico Print Works.

Councillor Elaine Green, East Ren convener for education, explained: “Secondary school children are being invited to come up with their own print patterns that will be projected as part of the Electric Glen festival.

“One winner will be chosen from each of our seven schools and runners up will have their work exhibited in Rouken Glen pavilion.”

Lizzie Garret, Walter Crum’s laboratory assistant, has been visiting schools this week to launch the Dare to Dye competition, with a reminder that all entries must be sent to Eastwood Park Theatre by December 31.

For the rest of us, the 2014 festival promises more of the same, with visual, sound and performance clues highlighting the history of the park.

Council leader Jim Fletcher commented: “Whether you’re local to the area or plan a visit to Glasgow in February, Electric Glen will be a great night out for everyone.

“It’s a stunning natural landscape and this year will explore a whole new aspect of Rouken Glen’s unique social history, which ties into being part of Homecoming Scotland.”
