Litter lout fines for under 16s

There has been mixed reaction to the news that South Lanarkshire Council will be handing out fines to under 16-year-olds for littering.

Until recently young people under the age of 16 had been excluded from fines but, after a successful pilot period which began in June, the council has decided to extend it to everyone.

Donald Ferguson said: “If whoever is responsible for it uses a bit of discretion then, yes, it is a good idea.”

However, Rev Bryan Kerr, from Greyfriars Church in Lanark, believes that the council has to educate children more.

He said: “I fear wardens will be waiting up closes for young people to drop litter and then pounce. It is a money-making scheme for the council.”
