Members of the group five squad at Bishopbriggs Fire Station are preparing for a sponsored swim in Bardowie Loch.

They hope the gruelling event will raise money for the Schiehallion Ward at Yorkhill Children’s Hospital and The Burned Children’s Club.

Watch Commander Raymond Stewart said: “We wanted to do something for these charities which are close to all our hearts, and we decided to do a sponsored swim of the loch.

“The distance, going out and back, is about a mile and a half.”

Raymond expects there will be an element of competition on the day of the event as all six firefighters taking part will set-off at the same time.

He added: “I am sure there will be some competition. A few of us have been doing lengths in the sports centre pool and as part of our remit within the fire brigade we work out anyway, so we are all pretty ready for the challenge.”

The firefighters hope to raise a minimum of £600 for the charities. They are also planning to hold a fundraising race night.

Businesses that would like to donate items for the auction have been asked to e-mail [email protected]

Anyone who would like to help out at the race night can also contact Raymond via the e-mail address.

The sponsored swim is due to take place on Saturday, June 9.
