Lottery funding boost for Southside community groups

Barrhead’s Tuesday Friendship Club has been awarded £10,000 to help provide a weekly night for adults with learning disabilities and ASN.

The cash boost will allow the club to pay some of its staff as well as pay for entertainment such as a singer or magician.

Mags Monaghan, chairman, said: “We are overwelmed about getting the funding. We applied last year but were knocked back, since we were new. I think we didn’t have enough evidence of what we are about.”

The club has also received other means of funding to help cover the cost of staff uniforms, entertainment including pantos and its birthday fund.

Glasgow Bike Shed Ltd will use its award of £10,000 to inspire more young people to take up cycling.

The Govanhill Gears project will deliver two after school sessions in the area and teach the youngsters how to cycle and maintain bikes.

Hannah Hughes, training officer, said: “We have some really enthusiastic budding young cyclists who don’t have the means to build their own bikes so access to our fleet of bicycles gives them a brilliant opportunity to build their cycling skills.

“We can’t wait to tell them about this exciting new funding from the National Lottery and we will now be able to double our efforts to include lots more local children and young people in our cycling clubs.”

A National Lottery Awards for All Scotland spokesman said: “The 97 groups receiving funding showcases the range of projects that can be funded through this programme and the difference that the smallest amounts of money can make.”
