Making a clean sweep of G43

a GROUP of community minded activists are going out their way to clean up Pollokshaws.

ReForm G43 is an initiative which is part of the Pollokshaws settlement and integration network.

After a recent community consultation, the group discovered that although people loved living in Pollokshaws, there was definitely room for improvement in the G43 area.

Group leader Graeme McKerracher, a community development worker for Pollokshaws parish church, noticed that much needed to be done in the area.

He told The Extra: “The issues that came up time and time again were those of litter, vandalism, weeds and the general run down feel of the place.

“So, we decided we would get together and do something to improve that”.

Last Saturday, the group held its first in a series of short, sharp, focused direct actions around improving the district.

The first event was a litter pick, attended by 13 enthusiastic people, with gardening projects, graffiti-scrubbing and much more to come in the following months.

On Saturday, Shawbridge Street in Pollokshaws was the focus, with lots of litter picked, weeds pulled and a huge difference made to the area.

Each received a free lunch as a reward for their hard work.

Mr McKerracher added: “There will be monthly actions, and it’s a great chance to get your hands dirty, make new friends and be part of positive change in your community.

“These events are set to continue each month, and we hope they will go from strength to strength”.

Future ReForm G43 actions will be taking place monthly on Saturdays; October 15, November 19 and a special Christmas meet-up on December 17.

Each meeting will begin at 9.30am at Pollokshaws library where a full briefing and dividing up of jobs takes place.

All tools and work gloves will be supplied with lunch provided at 12.30pm after the project is completed.
