Making headlines

The News and Chronicle were recently invited to meet some of the high-flying youngsters at Abronhill High School.

Reporter Neil McGrory and photographer John Devlin met Louise Reid and Ruth McQueen, the debating duo who recently reached the final of the prestigious Scullion Law Debate competition and the school maths team.

Brainy teens Katherine Gow, Allan Thomson, Scott Telfer and Vanessa Juba landed fourth place, making them the highest-placed school from North Lanarkshire and the best-performing state school in Scotland.

They also met the team of pupils who compile the weekly item for Abronhill High in our community pages and passed on a few tips.

Abronhill parents, politicians and the wider community are currently campaigning to save the school from a possible merger, part of the budget cut proposals from the council.
