An investigation has started after the death of a Cleland man in police custody.

Steven Chesney (33) died in Wishaw General Hospital after being taken ill at Motherwell police station yesterday, police said.

The Crown Office has instructed the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner to probe the circumstances surrounding his death.

Police Scotland Assistant Chief Constable Malcolm Graham said Mr Chesney “became unwell on arrival in police custody within Motherwell police office”.

He added: “Our thoughts are with the family at this tragic time.

“As this is a live investigation, we are unable to comment further.”

A spokesman for PIRC said: “A report into the findings of the investigation will be submitted to the Crown Office in due course.”
