Man guilty of Uddingston murder

Paul Kane stabbed the youth after an allegation that Mr Banks had hit a girl, the High Court in Glasgow was told.

The 18-year-old was stabbed through the heart in North British Road, Uddingston, last September.

Kane (25) admitted knifing Mr Banks, but claimed it wasn’t deliberate.

Liam Donnelly (19), who had also denied murder, was convicted of the lesser charge of culpable homicide on an ‘art and part’ basis.

Kane sparked angry scenes in the courtroom as he was led handcuffed to the cells. He taunted the victim’s friends and family with gestures.

The jury heard how a girl of 16 had called Donnelly asking him to “batter” Mr Banks.

She went on to speak to Kane during another phone call.

In evidence, the witness recalled: “Paul asked if Sean had any weapons on him. I said someone earlier mentioned he had a knife and Paul said ‘I have a bigger one’.”

The girl told the court she thought Kane was only joking.

However, Kane later called back and told her: “That’s it done.”

The trial heard Mr Banks was stabbed four times, but Kane insisted he did not strike the teenager deliberately, adding: “I can’t remember stabbing him.

“I didn’t mean for him to die. He kept coming at me.”

Prosecutor Iain McSporran branded the killing “a brutal, unprovoked multiple stabbing”.

The court was told Kane already had a long history of violence dating back to when he was a teenager.

He and Donnelly were also convicted of assaulting another boy.

Judge Lord Armstrong deferred sentence until September 20 in Edinburgh.
