Man hospitalised after falling onto rail line

AN elderly man was rushed to hospital on Sunday after falling onto a railway line.

The man is thought to have plunged down a steep embankment from the Burnfield Road bridge and onto the line between Thornliebank and Giffnock stations, at around 12.30pm.

Trains on the Glasgow to East Kilbride route were cancelled as Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and British Transport Police attended the scene.

A Network Rail spokeswoman confirmed that the man was taken to hospital with suspected spinal injuries, and yesterday a BTP spokesman added: “He was taken by ambulance to the Southern General hospital where he is presently detained”.
