Volunteering is a big part of Martha Weaving’s life and she would encourage anyone to give it a go.

Smiling Martha, who is 76 years old and lives in Carbrain, became involved with Watch Us Grow 13 years ago when she was experiencing health problems and was told a stint as a volunteer might help.

Watch Us Grow is a well-known local charity which helps people with learning difficulties train in horticultural skills with a view to finding employment and increasing their independence.

“I liked the group but as my health wasn’t so good I couldn’t really cope with gardening. So I spoke to Ann McCulloch, who runs the group, and she said? ‘Well, what else can you do?’ I told her I was quite handy with accounts and that was that.”

Martha formerly worked in the payroll department of Cumbernauld Development Corporation and found her skills were a great fit for the needs of Watch Us Grow. She goes there twice a week.

“I love being a volunteer at Watch Us Grow, I really get a lot out of it. An old friend of mine who sadly passed away recently always used to say ‘nothing for nothing’ but to me that isn’t the right way to live.”

Ann McCulloch of Watch Us Grow added: “Martha is an absolute star, I don’t know what we’d do without her, she’s just brilliant.”
