Mearns Castle debating team speaks up

MEARNS Castle High pupils are gearing up for a debating district final after winning an East Renfrewshire-wide speaking challenge.

The team — Andrew Kimble, Bosire Oroko and Jennifer Howie — won the heat against Barrhead, St Luke’s, St Ninian’s and Woodfarm High schools to land the Provost’s Cup in the Rotary Youth Speaks senior competition.

Their topic was Being Scafrican — a reference to Bosire’s Scottish and African backgrounds.

The district heats will be held in Glasgow in February, and if the team succeed, they’ll be off to the national final in Kent this May.
