Mearns Kirk cares for dementia community

Volunteers at the Newton Mearns church hope to break down social isolation among those living with the disease — and those closest to them — by hosting a 12-4pm lunch every Thursday in the community hall.

Reverend Joe Kavanagh told The Extra: “Mearns Kirk has been opening the doors to the community in many ways in recent years, from its Friendship Club to Bereavement Support Group — and in their own ways, these groups have helped many along the journey of life, which sometimes proves very difficult.

“Now, every Thursday afternoon, people living with dementia and, by extension, their carers, are offered an afternoon of enjoyment, socialising, and even developing new interests.

“Lunch and afternoon tea are provided along with arts and crafts, painting, music and much more.

“The Lunch Club is staffed by volunteers, some of whom are doing training through Stirling University, and is proving to be very popular.”

Organiser Isobel Dawson has been collecting comments from those already attending — and there’s high praise for the church initiative.

One carer commented: “When I see my husband in the club, it’s the only time I see him smiling now.”

Another member added: “It’s wonderful to feel normal again — everyone is so caring.”
