Mearns man tackles Kilimanjaro for charity

A Newton Mearns man has signed up to climb the largest mountain in the world to raise money for the children’s charity CLIC Sargent.

Property manager Joe Quinn, 58, will join around 16 fellow charity climbers later this month to make the killer climb up Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

Having already raised almost £2,000 for his charity, funds were boosted this week with a donation from East Renfrewshire council of £100, pledged by provost Alastair Carmichael.

Receiving the cheque, May Gilchrist, pictured with Joe, said: “This is an extremely kind donation to receive and will help the work we do for young people with cancer in Scotland.”

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain — not part of a mountain range — in the world at 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level.
