Mearns show in full bloom

The event was held at Fairweather Hall on March 11, where the best of the bunch were presented with awards.

Winners included Peter Watson (the Fa’side Challenge cup) for best bulb exhibit, Sheena Ross (Harold Fairweather trophy) for best pot plant, Iris Adam (Hazeldean trophy) for best cut flowers and Cheryl Nixon (Marion Ferns trophy) for best petite flower arrangement.

Charles Murray, honorary treasurer, told The Extra: “Members displayed beautiful tulips, hyacinths, small bulbs, plants as well as flower arrangements — filling the hall with the scent of the flowers.

“While the judging took place, Mary Fyfe gave a very interesting lecture about creating a border and saving a raised bed, then Mrs Cynthia Martin presented the trophies to the winners.”

There are no written records of the society’s early years, but it has been said it all began in 1858 over an argument about who had grown the largest cabbage.

The spring competition started as a bulb exhibition following the end of the Second World War, and is now one of the few spring flower shows still held in Scotland.
