The main aim of the Well foundation is the provision of clean water and sanitation, but more than that the charity also run health projects, eye camps, to treat preventable blindness, and assistance schemes such as their sewing machine project to help families in difficulty find a way out of poverty. Monies raised locally have helped to dig wells and provide clean water to areas of Mali, Malawi, Pakistan and the Sudan to name just a few.

Mr Wilson said: “It was wonderful to meet the committee and hear about the work they do.

“The Mosque volunteers organise a wide range of activities and charitable endeavours for the local community, the Mosque is an excellent community hub and it was wonderful to hear about the warm welcome the community gave to newly arrived refugees.

“Starting a new life in Lanarkshire after having undertaken such traumatic journeys to safety must be very difficult for these families, the care and support the Mosque community have provided will, I am sure, be much needed and very appreciated.”
