Memories of Govanhill for generations to see

Govanhill Library lit up this week after more than 40 locals aged 12-64 joined forced to create stained glass windows celebrating the area’s cultural diversity.

The Diversity Windows project — organised by Glasgow life and Govanhill Youth Project — was unveiled on Tuesday, with five stained glass pieces telling stories of community and unity among cultures, as well as detailing Govanhill’s history.

Those involved in creating the artworks included the Asian Women’s Group, Irish Heritage Foundation, Govanhill Youth Project, AGAP Art Group and pupils from Hollybrook Academy, each working for nine months alongside artist Keira McLean to leave their mark on what Govanhill means to them.

Councillor Archie Graham, chair of Glasgow Life, said: “Govanhill Library sits at the very heart of this diverse community, and I’m delighted that residents of all ages have come together to portray the area in such a striking, positive way.

“I would urge everyone to visit the library to enjoy the fantastic stories depicted by this stunning installation.”

Stained glass artist Keira thanked everyone involved in the project, calling Govanhill Library “a central hub for all members of the community — the perfect home for the Diversity Windows”.
