Milngavie Week gets a new lease of life for 2016

A much-loved local festival is back after becoming a hotly-debated topic in the recent Making the Most of Milngavie survey.

Milngavie Week, which ran from 1966 until 2006 is now being revived by popular demand.

One of the organising team, Wilson Blakey, said: “We were told that a festival like Milngavie Week is a way of bringing the community together and it is a key part of the new Community Development Trust’s priorities.”

Tracey Allan, another of the organising team, said “We hope that everyone in Milngavie will find something to interest them in our expanding list of events.”

The week begins on June 11 with the Highland Games and closes on June 18 with the BID’s classic car show.

And in between these two major attractions there will be a whole load of other events, some traditional and some new.

Already confirmed are a series of contests, including:

n A cat show for children, bring your own cat!

n Could your dog be a winner at the dog show or how do you fancy your chances with the Arnold Clark sponsored car treasure hunt?

The duck race on the River Allander, organised by Rotary of Allander, is set to be another big draw in the festival calendar.

Schools’ debating from Douglas Academy looks set to be a hotly contested competition, while the best kept garden (organised and judged by Milngavie in Bloom) is always a riot of colour and display throughout the town.

The Celebration of Milngavie in Bloom on the West Highland Way ties in nicely with the garden competition too.

Volunteers are very welcome to help with any of these events, or add suggestions – and organisers are looking for more sponsors to join Waitrose, Marks and Spencer, Tesco, Arnold Clark, Colpi’s, the Highland Games Organisers and the BID.
