Miners’ welfare society seeks cash injection

Located in the heart of the former mining village, Croy Miners’ Welfare Charitable Society supports numerous community groups which serve a wide variety of demographics and purposes. Its centre is home to everything from councillors’ surgeries to dance classes.

However, a drop in the funding received from external sources is blamed for the Society being unable to cover its staffing costs and it is now £50,000 in debt. This was revealed in a report made publicly available by North Lanarkshire Council.

Centre manager Catherine Martin said: “This is largely due to the rising costs of utilities. I can’t really talk about the details at the moment as the staff have not yet been briefed, but we do have a plan in place which will change how we generate income and the legal entities will change.”
