Minister voices concerns about Lanark’s new cemetery

A LANARK minister has voiced deep fears that those visiting the town’s new cemetery might tragically become among the first citizens buried there.

Speaking hours after he led the service to dedicate the new graveyard at Springbank, near Ravenstruther, the Rev Bryan Kerr of Greyfriars Church told the Gazette of his serious concerns for public safety, largely due to the cemetery’s remoteness from Lanark, the town it is meant to serve.

“The new cemetery itself is well laid out and landscaped but the problem is where it is,” said the clergyman. “It is simply too far from Lanark itself and too distant for anyone but the young and fit to walk to visit the grave of a loved one.

“There isn’t even a footpath all the way there from Lanark and it is on a stretch of road, the Ravenstuther ‘cut’, which has a lot of heavy lorry traffic on it, heading to and from the nearby Coal Transfer Rail Depot.

“I have sincere concerns about the safety of slow funeral parties turning on and off that road at the cemetery.”
