Miracle escape from Lesmahagow gas explosion

THERE was a miracle escape for an elderly couple on Sunday when their Lesmahagow home was ripped apart in a massive gas explosion.

The survival of 73-year-old Daniel Martin and 72-year-old partner Sheila McDonald amazed fellow villagers, stunned by the violence of the blast in Turfholm that morning.

Their feelings were summed up by Sheila’s sister Moira Ross, who said: “It was such a shock to everyone – but thankfully no-one was hurt.”

Expecting the worst, emergency crews raced to the scene of the explosion at around 10.20am; mercifully, they found Daniel and Sheila not only alive but virtually unscathed from their ordeal.

Even their pet dogs walked from the tangled wreckage!
